A drill pipe wiper is normally placed around the outside of drill pipe or tubing oil drilling rigs, HDD rigs and service rigs. The primary purpose of pipe wipers in drilling operations to clean and remove excess drilling mud or debris from the outer surface of the drill pipe. It is an essential tool for maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of the drill pipe during the drilling process.

By keeping the drill pipe clean, the wiper helps prevent contamination of the wellbore, enhances drilling efficiency, and prolongs the life of the drill pipe.

 

How a Pipe Wiper Work?

• Installation: The drill pipe wiper is usually made of a flexible and durable rubber or polyurethane material. It is installed on the rig floor or the pipe rack area, where the drill pipe is prepared for tripping (removal or insertion into the wellbore).
• Tripping Process: When the drill pipe is being tripped out of the wellbore, it passes through the drill pipe wiper. The wiper’s rubber or polyurethane surface makes contact with the exterior of the drill pipe.
• Cleaning Action: As the drill pipe passes through the wiper, the flexible material conforms to the shape of the pipe, effectively scraping off any mud or debris adhering to its outer surface.

Types of Pipe Wiper

Drill pipe wipers are available in a few different types. The following are two of the most popular kinds of wipers:

Dual split wipers/dual split pipe wipers: Dual split options are highly efficient and use two different wiping surfaces to remove drilling fluids.

Flat pipe wipers: Flat options are also referred to as Type F and Jamel pipe wipers. These products utilize a single blade to wipe away mud and drilling fluids.
